With the advent of “Mobile Broadband”, the ability to connect your laptop to the internet, business professionals now have the ability to access the internet, email, corporate networks and multimedia services no matter where they are. Literally there are no strings attached!

Getting access to email, the internet and your corporate network through your mobile connected to the laptop has been possible for a number of years now, but the restriction has always been the cost, the slow speeds and therefore the time which it was taking to get what you wanted from such a service.

Mobilising the work force started to develop further with the advent of WiFi and Hotspots allowing laptop users to access the internet in coffee shops, Airport Lounges and Hotels and other public areas giving them access to the world wide web wirelessly within close proximity to the local service, at a cost!

In the last few years location no longer holds any boundaries with all of the networks launching their 3rd generation networks. Although not all 3G services are equal most of the networks have developed a solid infrastructure in highly populated and main road arteries and bus/ train stations throughout the country giving broadband speeds up to 384kbps depending on the strength of the signal and the number of simultaneous users in that particular “cell site”.

A couple of the networks have even introduced “HSDPA” or high Speed 3G services offering speeds of up to 3.6MB which is a lot more then some businesses get with their current broadband on a landline!

There are a number of different devices available to plug into your laptop, from a 3G data card to a 3G USB modem and some laptops are now even being sold with built in SIM slots for connecting and activating a 3G service.

Although most of the networks do restrict some services (a lot of them don’t like their networks to be used for VOIP or Skype related services) the only restriction is really the amount of data you can down and upload every month which is also generally subject to a fair use policy).

Most operators offer a “flat fee” per user or a quantity of data shared amongst a number of sharers. Monthly rates can be as little as £18.00 depending on the network chosen.

Field based staff who spend a lot of time on the road or at customer premises will really benefit from remote access to email and the internet where they will not always have access to a corporate or landline connection. And business can save time, money and increase productivity in a very short period of time.
